CHAN MAY PORT – HUE CITADEL
Chan May – Hue Imperial City Tour: (Serving Time 07:00AM – 6:00PM)
Motor coach to Hue and your first stop, the Royal Citadel. Built by Emperor Gia Long in 1804, the citadel's attractions include th e Noon Gate or "Ngo Mon." The gate leads to the Imperial Palace and was the ceremonial location for the kings' annual announcement of the year's calendar and the names of new doctors of philosophy.
Your glimpse into Vietnam's imperial past continues as you proceed to the Palace of Supreme Harmony. Playing host to coronation ceremonies, the emperors' birthday celebrations and twice-monthly court proceedings, the palace and nearby Esplanade of Great Salutation figured prominently in Hue's political and social activities. The palace, originally constructed in 1805, has been restored to its original grandeur with regal red and gold columns and lavish furnishings.
Next, walk to the Imperial Enclosure. Essentially a citadel within a citadel, this was the sequestered space where the emperor's official business was carried out. Following your Citadel visit, rejoin your motor coach for the short drive to Thien Mu Pagoda, or "Heavenly Lady Pagoda." Founded in 1601 by Lord Nguyen Hoang, governor of Thuan Hoa Province, the pagoda is the symbol of the city and one of the holiest pagodas in all of Vietnam. In the early 1960s, it was a hotbed of anti-government protest. Today, it is a serene place where monks deliver incantations in the main temple and novice horticulturists tend the bonsai garden.
Your Hue introduction now takes you from the art of bonsai to another of Vietnam's famed pursuits: embroidery. A short transfer aboard your motor coach brings you to a silk embroidery workshop, where you will observe how picture embroidery is created with pieces illustrating subjects ranging from scenes of everyday life to mythological tales.
After lunch in one of Hue's hotel restaurants, travel to the charming tomb of King Tu Duc. Well-versed in eastern philosophy, history and literature, Tu Duc was one of the most admired emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. He left behind 4,000 verses and this extraordinary tomb, which features a theatre, mausoleum, workplace and poem pavilion.
Before returning to your ship in Chan May, visit "Hat Village." As the nickname suggests, this is where you will find Hue's famous conical palm hats. While you browse, look closely: some hats are inscribed with a poetic verse. 18:00 End of tour at Chan May port./.
