ключевое слово - BETTER lens for less money
Olympus 28 f/3.5 is an absolute gem...tack sharp from corner to corner and dirt cheap
In many cases, you can get a BETTER lens for less money. For instance, my converted Rokkor 50 f/1.4 is much sharper than the Canon 50 f/1.4 from f/1.4-f/2. From f/2 and beyond they're a pretty close match for each other, but at wide apertures, the Rokkor smokes the Canon. And it cost me $125 including the very professionally milled mount conversion. My S-M-C Takumar 50 f/1.4 is just about as sharp as the Canon 50 f/1.4 (but with a very different rendering) and cost me roughly $20. My Zeiss 50 f/1.7 blows any Canon 50 away for sharpness, microcontrast and color saturation (though it lags in bokeh). Each of these 3 50mms give completely different renderings, and that's what's so cool. They have a very unique look, and sometimes that look is much better suited to your subject than the standard, rather plain look of the Canon 50s.
My Olympus 28mm f/3.5 is significantly sharper than the Canon 28 f/2.8, especially in the corners...weighs only a few ounces, is the size of a pancake lens, and cost me $45.
However, in other cases, it's certainly not worth it. For instance, there is no alternative lens that can touch the 85L. My Zeiss 85 f/2.8 Sonnar matches it (and even has higher microcontrast) in the same aperture range, but there's no f/1.2 (or even f/1.4) lens that can match the Canon in that aperture range (even Zeiss). Likewise, finding an 85 f/1.8 for that money that's as good as the Canon is pretty difficult.
In telezooms, there's nothing better than Canon. Wide-angles, on the other hand, are a different story. The only lens that can touch a Zeiss 21mm Distagon is actually the new Nikon 14-24, which is one of the best wide angle lenses ever made (which is good, because no one would carry that giant beast if it weren't spectacular).
I own two Zeiss lenses (Contax mount 50 f/1.7 and 85 f/2.8 ). The 50 f/1.7 is superior in sharpness, color and contrast to the Canon 50 f/1.4 in every way. However, the Canon 50 f/1.4 has superior bokeh. My 85 f/2.8 is as good as any L prime...phenomenal contrast, color, sharpness, bokeh, everything.
That said, the 85L and 135L are better than anything in the Zeiss lineup. Canon's telephotos (200mm + ) are generally better than Zeiss telephotos. On the wide end, however, the Zeiss lineup pretty much crushes anything from Canon. The Contax 21mm f/2.8 Distagon is widely considered the best wide angle lens for 35mm format ever created. Some of the new F-mount Zeiss lenses are fantastic, with the new 85 f/1.4 Planar coming darn close to the 85L, and the two macro lenses are fantastic. The 25 and 35 distagons are pretty special as well.
One thing: Zeiss lenses tend to have a very specific look. They have very high microcontrast, which leads to a certain '3D' look to the images. I happen to love that about them, however, many people don't like that drawing style.
Also, my Zeiss 50 f/1.7 is too sharp and contrasty, and with such mediocre bokeh that I do not use it for portraits unless I have to. It's much better suited to non-people applications. For portraits, I use my Zeiss 85 f/2.8, my Canon 100 f/2, or (most of all) my Rokkor 58mm f/1.2, which has such a nice smooth contrast curve and wonderful bokeh.
Want a wide angle lens that's sharp in the corners, center, and edge-to-edge, get an Oly. How does $70 sound for a 28mm/f2.8 that's sharp across the board?
t will blow your mind. The Contax 100 f/2 is one of the finest short telephoto optics ever made for ANY system...you will fall in love with it all over again. I wish I could afford to sink that much money into an MF prime, but my Canon 100 f/2 (which is VERY good) will have to do.
OMG yes. Planar T* 100 f2 > 85L/135L. And the Distagon 21 2.8...I can't wait until that comes out for the ZE mount.
The Leica R APO lenses (90 f2, 180 f2 etc) are also crazy.
Take two nearly identical lenses; the 2/50 Planar and 1,5/50 Sonnar. The Planar is a modern design, very sharp wide open with a long transition from IF to OOF. The Sonnar is a 1930s design, softer wide open with a unique "Sonnar look" yet sharpens up nicely stopped down. Helping with that Sonnar look is the quick transition from IF to OOF. It appears almost as if using a stop or so wider than you really are, in a way. Two great, but very distinct lenses - including the bokeh. Both have 10 aperture blades in the ZM versions.
Tomioka Yashinon 55/1.2 that set me back a cool $35
